Media Course

Course Objectives:

Students will:

  • recognize and appreciate the role of mass media in their communication, in contemporary Swedish society, and in their personal lives
  • recognize the codes, forms, and conventions of the various mass media
  • deconstruct mass media messages
  • recognize the key concepts of mass media and apply those concepts to various mediums
  • recognize the relationships between the mass media and the advertising industry
  • broaden their awareness of mass media issues
  • analyze and evaluate various mass media

Films

During this course we focus on the role media plays in our lives and how media is influenced by the creators and the intended audience. We use these concepts as we view movies, listen to music and explore different types of social media in our world. Below is information concerning the films we have already watched.

Simple Simon Poster

When Sam's girlfriend breaks up with him he becomes depressed. To cheer him up, and get things back to normal, his socially awkward brother Simon (Skarsgård) decides to set out on a quest to find Sam a new, perfect, girlfriend. Struggling with his own Asperger Syndrome, the quest is more difficult than Simon first expected.

Bröderna Lejonhjärta (The Brothers Lionheart)

9-year old Karl Lejon, 'Skorpan' is suffering from tuberculosis and knows that he will die soon. But his older brother Jonathan tries to comfort him by promising that they one day will meet in Nangijala, a magic country beyond the stars. Jonathan dies in a house fire and Skorpan also dies not long after. They meet in Nangijala, a country divided into the Cherry Blossom Valley and the Thorn Rose Valley. The people in the later are oppressed by the black knight Tengil and his dragon Katla. The two brothers, who now call themselves Jonathan and Karl Lionheart, decide to help the freedom fighters against the oppression. A classis story of good versus evil from one of our favorite Swedish authors Astrid Lindgren.
